My Address to the Boston Tea Party

After all the spending bills have done their damage, this nation will be approximately 12 TRILLION dollars in debt… which is sadly ironic because there are 12 zeros in that number – a number that is SO big, most people can’t even seem to wrap their head around it. In a single month, this administration has increased the national deficit and debt by about 25%.

With the $787 billion dollar “stimulus” bill, there’s an ad spot – and I don’t know if you’ve seen this – but there’s an ad spot which explains that you could spend a million dollars every single day since the birth of Jesus (that’s about 2,000 years ago for you secular types), and even if you spent that much at that rate, you still wouldn’t have spent as much as this administration did on this one bill.

So, what did we get out of it?
(In millions)
Food and farming $26,466
Commerce, justice and science $15,920
Defense $4,555
Energy and the environment $50,825
Government $6,858
Homeland security $2,755
Outdoors, Indian reservations and the arts $10,950
Labor and volunteering, healthcare and social services, education, social security $72,564
Military and veterans $4,281
Foreign relations $602
Transportation and housing $61,795
Aid to states $53,600
Tax cuts $301,278
Individual aid $45,788
Individual healthcare aid $24,749
Health IT $17,559
Aid to states for Medicaid $90,044
Total: $787,241

I'd argue that about 1/2 of this bill isn't aimed at economic stimulus at all.

Make no mistake, a large portion of this bill had very little to do with our economic situation. This was a transparent attempt to push through a big-spending initiative that’s been waiting in the socialist wings for years. As Obama’s Chief of Staff, Rham Emmanuel pointed out, they “will not let a crises go to waste.”

Why else was this bill rushed through Congress before a single representative had a chance to read it? It certainly wasn’t for urgency; most of the spending won’t even start until a year from now. No… this bill was rushed through Congress (after which point it sat on Obama’s desk for three days while he went on holiday with his family) because the administration and Congress knew this “stimulus” fa├žade represented the single best opportunity to bully through their pork initiatives… which, in turn, raises their popularity with their constituency.. which is just a pathetic attempt to take advantage of this recession with the intent of getting themselves re-elected.

In the basest of summaries – all of this pork is aimed at buying votes. Votes which, by in large, are not cast by voters with a comprehensive understanding of our economic situation – I’m talking about a portion of the population which has somehow forgotten that a few hundred dollar welfare check comes at the expense of a job which would, ultimately, pay far more. There are the same people who fail to understand that the government can’t give out anything to anyone unless it comes from someone else.

As President’s Ford and Reagan both pointed out, “A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take away everything you have.” I think Americans have had it so good for so long, we’ve started to think we’re above and beyond the basic principles of big and small government.

Well, that’s what this Nation-wide tea-party is all about! Around the nation, hundreds, maybe thousands of Americans are gathering to protest the expansion of this socialist government agenda. Our founding fathers threw tea into the Boston Harbor to protest King George’s taxation without representation of America. We’re protesting because King Obama is disproportionately taxing the people who make the jobs and investments in this country, and giving that money (in the form of pork projects, socialist initiatives and welfare) to the people who he knows voted for him in November and who he “hopes” will vote for him in 2012. It’s all about buying votes…

The strawman response to our concerns is that, “The government has to do something.” Well gee-wiz! When you put it like that, I guess a 12 trillion dollar national debt doesn’t sound so bad, huh?

Here are some American Solutions, worked up and promoted by Newt Gingrich, which I think we can all stand behind…

1. Payroll Tax Stimulus: With a temporary new tax credit to offset 50% of the payroll tax, every small business would have more money, and all Americans would take home more of what they earn.

2. Real Middle-Income Tax Relief: Reduce the marginal tax rate of 25% down to 15%, in effect establishing a flat-rate tax of 15% for close to 9 out of 10 American workers.

3. Reduce the Business Tax Rate: Match Ireland’s rate of 12.5% to keep more jobs in America.

4. Homeowner’s Assistance: Provide tax credit incentives to responsible home buyers so they can keep their homes.

5. Control Spending So We Can Move to a Balanced Budget: This begins with eliminating Congressional earmarks and wasteful pork-barrel spending.

6. No State Aid Without Protection From Fraud: Require state governments to adopt anti-fraud and anti-theft policies before giving them more money.

7. More American Energy Now: Explore for more American oil and gas and invest in affordable energy for the future, including clean coal, ethanol, nuclear power and renewable fuels.

8. Abolish Taxes on Capital Gains: Match China, Singapore and many other competitors. More investment in America means more jobs in America.

9. Protect the Rights of American Workers: We must protect a worker’s right to decide by secret ballot whether to join a union, and a worker’s right to negotiate freely. Forced unionism will kill jobs at a time when we can’t afford to lose them.

10. Replace Sarbanes-Oxley: This failed law is crippling entrepreneurial startups. Replace it with affordable rules that help create jobs, not destroy them.

11. Abolish the Death Tax: Americans should work for their families, not for Washington.

12. Invest in Energy and Transportation Infrastructure: This includes a new, expanded electric power grid and a 21st century air traffic control system that will reduce delays in air travel and save passengers, employees and airlines billions of dollars per year.

Allow me to leave you with this parting thought:

It was the Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev who once said, "We cannot expect Americans to jump from capitalism to communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism until they suddenly awake to find they have communism."

Obma was right about one thing during his congressional address the other night, the time of reckoning IS now. We cannot allow this generational theft act to go quietly. We cannot idly stand by as politicians ignore the dire needs of this country and peruse their own self interests. Join me and capitalists around the nation in our efforts to revitalize the principles which have helped make this country the most wealthy and charitable nation in the world.

Thanks so much for listening. Let's get started on the BIG Tea Party on July 4 - where we will remind everyone why this is the land of opportunity, not the land of socialist favoritism.
